It's not very often I get to go out to the movies, but I had nothing else going on.  So a friend of mine and I went to go see Dracula Untold just for the hell of it.  Although I would try not to spoil too much of it, I can provide a bit of a review of it.

The first thing I would have to point out is the story.  Now, all of us know about the story of Dracula since it was foretold many a times over the years.  Most of them revert to the classic Bela Lugoisi approach set in the 1700s-1800s, seducing women and being staked by a German Professor by the name of Van Helsing.  Like the saying goes, the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree.  With that in mind, I can say was very much impressed with the story of this spin.  Not only did it contain elements of the classic lore and mythos pertaining to vampires, they actually did a great job toeing in the historical facts of the character, all the way down to the name.  This is something that I personally think is very innovative as a whole since it's rare to find such things to tie themselves with actual historical facts and actual events.  Throughout the movie he has been acknowledged by his former nickname, and literally, lived up to it.  I don't think the 300 Spartans could hold a steady glass to what this guy can do by himself.  I mean, yeah he can shift into a series of bats to bust his speed, superior strength, enhanced senses.  But, the really interesting twist added was having Vlad containing the ability to manipulate bats with simple gestures and utilize that against the Sultan's Army.  I don't know about you guys, but I find that's pretty badass for one guy to do.  But that's just my opinion. If that isn't enough, he does get to manipulate the weather just to finish off the Turkish army with a handful of children of his own.

So what was the story exactly?  Well, I for one don't know if I can say much, but the trailers hint at it a bit of what it's about.  But I can say, is it explains why he becomes the Prince of Darkness.  The biggest drive is preventing the Turks from collecting 1000 children to become part of their army ranks.  One of the major things I really liked is during a specific scene he is speaking with the vampire he finds early on in the Broken Tooth Mountain as to why he was there.  "Sometimes, a hero isn't enough, and a monster is needed."  It kind of puts things into perspective.  In way you sympathize with him since you understand why he is going to such lengths.

At the conclusion I would admit was a nice touch to keep us thinking what may come to be if it does happen.  Granted, I thought it was over after the climatic bout with the Sultan himself.
Upon clearing the skies, I thought:  "Well, I guess it's to be a legend then."  Until retainer comes along and brings him back.  That brought a smile to my face admiringly.  I was happy to see that they were hinting at a continuation.
As far as the performances were, it wasn't too bad.  The actors did a good job keeping the realism and emotional connection with the audience.  The chemistry between each of the actors was very nicely done.  The scenery was very nice as well.  As far as the music goes, it helped set the mood straight.  And their were portions that made you jump.

Their were a few things that did kind of bug me.  One of the things I think I could agree on with my friend is they could have set it up as a legend instead of the direction they did go.  But, at the same time, I can see why they carried it on the way they did.  It actually does make sense, and if you think about it, why stop there?  After all, Dracula is supposed to be lurking the shadows for centuries.  The other thing would be the arcane aspect.  Since they carried Dracula on to live, I feel he should have a bit of sorcery under his belt.  Mind you, he does swoon a woman a bit.  Finally, I kind of wished we knew more about the Vampire from Brokentooth Mountain.  Well, if they make a follow up, I'm sure they would go a little further with it.

Overall, I think Dracula Untold is well worth the price.  I would recommend checking it out if given the chance.  You may find it's quite impressive, though a bit sappy in some areas.  lol.  I really enjoyed it and the direction they went.  It was very refreshing to see a different approach to the character.  :)

anyways, that's my little review.  Not much, but it's something.  Off to sleep I go!
